Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter was born on June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, New Jersey but grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. As a freshman at Kalamazoo Central High School he played on the varsity team. He won multiple awards in high school for his performance in the field. In 1992 he was drafted by the New York Yankees baseball organization as a shortstop. The Yankees is the only team he has played for in his 19 year major league career.  Jeter was drafted as the 6th overall pick in the 1992 draft. In 1996 he helped the Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves to win the World Series. He then led his team to three more World Series wins in 1998, 1999, and 2000. In 2001, game 3 of the ALDS (American League Division Series) against the Oakland Athletics, Derek Jeter made one of his most iconic plays. Dubbed "The Flip" Jeter backed up a wide throw to home and flipped the ball to the the catcher to get the out at home and save a run .http://m.mlb.com/video/v3134880/nyyoak-gm-3-jeter-cuts-down-runner-with-iconic-flip He was later named captain of the team in 2003. He won the World Series again in 2009. Jeter is the Yankees all time hit leader. In the 2013 season he played only 11 games due to injury. Derek Jeter has announced his retirement at the end of the 2014 season. Jeter bats right handed, throws right handed, and wears the number 2.
